High Torque Low Speed Motors (PMSM)
Gearboxes, standard induction motors and hydraulic systems are high-maintenance and inefficient. High torque low speed permanent magnet synchronous motors (direct torque motors) couple straight to the load, cutting energy and operating costs. Available as standard and customised motors.
Applications: Rapid mixer granulators, tablet presses, extruders, packing machines, roller compactors, injection moulding screws, gearless elevators

Why direct drive
- Better control: torque and current are directly related, so torque is easy to determine and control
- Improved reliability and zero maintenance: no gears, belts or wear parts
- Fewer parts: just the motor and mounting bolts, so fewer items on the BOM and assembly in minutes instead of hours
- Lower overall cost once extra transmission parts and labour are removed
- No inertia-matching penalty, so no oversized motor
- Reduced audible noise
PMSM compared with an induction motor
- Very high starting torque, about 300% of rated value
- Current is directly proportional to torque, so machine torque can be read from the current
